wood-shed
–verb (used without object)
Slang. to practice a musical instrument assiduously and with a specific goal in mind: He's woodshedding for next week's show.
From time to time I'll be posting home-made videos of things I'm working on, studying, trying out or just think are cool. Much of my inspiration and instruction come from mentor and pals, Jim Campilongo & Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo). I am greatly appreciative. Thanks for watching. |

Immaculate Zombies June 2011 © Kevin Barber/Diamond Horseshoe Records This started with me strumming two chords on my Tele while I was laying down watching t.v. I came across a couple of sounds I liked and went into the new (not yet together) studio and recorded the loop of the two chord progression. What you're seeing here is the last three minutes of an eleven minute modal practice and melodic search - most of it is in D. By the time this clip starts I've established two or three ideas I've begun to work around. At 1:41 I come across the melody that will take the clip out. Happily I got enough to build on and plan on sharing a whole song sometime soon! I'm playing the KB295 through the Vibrolux and the Boomerang Loop Sampler is heard through the 65 Princeton Reverb. Audio/Video shot with a Canon VIXIA HFM30. |

Django's Castle December 2010 Jim showed me this song, Bill gave insight to the modes and it's been a favorite ever since. In this clip I'm using different modes on top of the progression in the improvised intro, outro, solo and some of the chord melody. My intention was to create tonal contrast to the chords by not directly playing them or accentuating the root note. Example: on top of the D6 I often employed its 3rd, F# minor. Gear wise, I laid down and controlled the rhythm on a Boomerang Phrase Sampler. The amp is a 65 Fender Princeton Reverb RI with the verb set at 6 and volume 3. The guitar is my custom KB 295. For more on the guitar see my Gear page. Video and audio were recorded on a Sony DCR - SX63 digital camcorder.
